1873: The Panic of 1873 begins, a huge coincidence, since this was in fact, 1873.


1885: Riots break out in Montreal to protest against compulsory smallpox vaccination. But they are easily controlled, since the rioters are mostly five-year-olds.


1895: Daniel David Palmer gives the first chiropractic adjustment. It's been 114 years and the patient's insurance company is still refusing to cover the procedure.


1927: CBS goes on the air with a special "only 82 years until Obama is president" countdown show.


1997: United States media magnate Ted Turner donates $1 billion to the United Nations. Most of the money is used to pay the delegates' outstanding New York City parking tickets.
