August 16th

1812: In the War of 1812, American General William Hull surrenders Fort Detroit without a fight to the British Army and the UAW.

1841: President John Tyler vetoes a bill which called for the re-establishment of the Second Bank of the United States. Outraged bankers go back to speculating on stocks and subprime slaves.

1977: Elvis Presley dies from a drug overdose in his home in Graceland at age 42. And by "drugs", they mean Twinkies, Peanut Butter and Ol Milwaukee.
