1692: 5 women are hanged in the Salem Witch Trials in Salem, Massachusetts. Defense attorneys vow to appeal.


1799: Napoleon Bonaparte's soldiers discover the Rosetta Stone, helping to create millions of overpriced museum gift shop items for generations to come.


1870: France declares war on Prussia for reportedly serving red wine with fish.
