1793: The first cornerstone of the Capitol building is laid by George Washington... it is later removed by thugs protesting the fact that Washington was a non-union worker.
1885: Riots break out in Montreal to protest against compulsory smallpox vaccination... they were led by a popular dancer at the local burlesque.
1948: Margaret Chase Smith of Maine becomes the first woman elected to the US Senate... of course in Maine, it's kind of hard to tell the difference.
