1698: In an effort to move his people away from old customs, Tsar Peter I of Russia imposes a tax on beards. Unfortunately, only the Russian women decide to shave.


1774: The First Continental Congress assembles in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and immediately votes itself a pay raise.


1793: The French National Convention initiates the Reign of Terror... the French have been terrible ever since.
